Manifa's Story: Selecting a Photographer

Written by . Posted in Manifa's Story

Attention! Attention! Attention! WE HAVE BOOKED OUR PHOTOGRAPHER! Sorry I’m a little excited! Although planning a wedding is not an easy task, picking our photographer was a no brainer. I’ve become one of those brides that follows EVERY vendor on Instagram. My feed is full of weddings pictures! I was like this before I even started planning a wedding and one of my favorite photographers has been Sakosan for the longest time. I first discovered his photographs from a picture Harsanik.com posted on their own Instagram and ever since that day I knew he was going to photograph my wedding. I've shared some of my favorite photos from Sakosan in this blog.

A few weeks before Emin even proposed to me, we attended my cousin’s wedding together. It was an absolutely beautiful wedding! I remember being stunned by all the centerpieces and the coordination of the whole event, but one thing stood out to me the most, THE PHOTOGRAPHER! I saw him and his team in the middle of all the action. He was taking pictures at all these interesting angles and he was there through the whole night. Looking at the main photographer I knew he looked familiar. It wasn’t until I had a quick moment to go on Instagram that I realized who he was. I saw a picture of my cousin in my feed and when I looked at who had posted it; it was Sakosan! I got so excited and I started showing Emin his work and even he was impressed. I remember him excitedly saying, “We should have him at our wedding.” At the time, I didn’t think anything about it, but little did I know he already knew he was going to propose in a couple weeks.

About two weeks after Emin proposed I did what any crazy new bride would do, I began planning our wedding! On our drive to Las Vegas, after Emin proposed, we decided on two good dates, in 2019, for the wedding. I had heard from one of my cousins that some vendors are booked years in advanced, so we decided to give ourselves a little bit of time to plan, but I was urgent to start soon. I was overly excited, but which new bride isn’t? I found Sakosan’s number on Harsanik.com and I called him. We made an appointment to see him the following week on a Tuesday.

That next Tuesday, Emin and I met up and drove to Glendale to meet with Sakosan. Walking into the office space was amazing. It looked like a cool New York loft, with photographs EVERYWHERE! Stunning shots of brides by themselves, a gorgeous husband and wife kissing, a couple walking into the sunset. It was exquisite! Some of the pictures I recognized from his Instagram page. On the coffee table were a bunch of albums that we would later get to go through as well.

Sako met us in the waiting area and introduced himself. We all sat down and he asked us what we were looking for. I explained to Sako that we wanted a very creative photographer. We truly did want someone who would feel free to do crazy things and take crazy shots. Someone who wasn’t afraid to break the mold of the typical wedding photo. We got a chance to hear from him as well and to be able to discuss his vision and how he likes to work. Sako is a great guy! He is very calm and down to earth. Emin really hit it off with him right away, as they are both the soft-spoken type. I could tell that his personality would be extremely helpful on the day of the wedding.

After all the talking he gave us a flyer with his packages and pricing. I was shocked to find out that video and photo location was not included in any of the packages. I didn’t know that we had to book the videographer and photo location on our own! I didn’t even know that booking a photoshoot location was our job! This was news to me. Sako went over his packages and even let us customize the package we wanted to choose. We knew our parents wouldn’t really care if they got an album or not so he let us substitute it for a pre-wedding shoot instead. We weren’t planning on taking pre-wedding pictures, but Sako recommended it because it gave us a chance to work with him before the wedding so that we would all know what to expect on the day of. The idea of a photoshoot got Emin really excited. Remember how I told you in my first blog that Emin’s number one priority was his car? Well, you won’t guess the idea he had for our photo shoot location! Angeles Crest! Yes, that’s right folks, my dear fiancé wants our pre-wedding pictures to include his precious car! Sako even thought it was a great idea! Please don’t tell Emin, because he would think very highly of himself, but I thought it was a great idea too! After everything was all discussed, Sako gave us a contract and told us to think about and let us know when we made our decision, since we still had a lot of time. I looked him straight in the eyes and said, “I’m not going to lie to you, we made our decision before even walking in here! I don’t need to meet with other photographers. We want you to photograph our wedding, which date is better for you?” He told us that he was available for both our dates so we randomly chose one, which was June 22, 2019, and gave him the deposit the next day.

It was that quick and that easy! When you know what you want you don’t overthink it. That has been my take on anything wedding related so far. I knew the best photographer we could hire was Sakosan. I didn’t need to confuse myself, or Emin, by going and talking to anyone else. We didn’t care what he charged or what was included in his packages. We knew he was the one we wanted and we weren’t going to waste our time by shopping around. I know what everyone is thinking, “So you had a photographer before you even had a wedding location planned?!” Yes! We booked Sako early enough where he didn’t really need that information yet. We were able to set our date in stone and then give him the details of everything later.

Booking your first vendor is extremely exciting. It makes you feel like the wedding is FINALLY REAL! Emin and I walked out of Sakosan’s office with the cheesiest smiles on our faces. We sat in the car and looked at each other like WOW THIS IS HAPPENING! WE ARE GETTING MARRIED! It was surreal. It continues to get more and more real as we book each of our vendors. We are so happy to have Sakosan as part of our wedding team and we are already excited to see the pictures he takes and the memories he is able to capture.
