Entertainment Ideas For Your Reception

As if there aren’t enough tasks on your wedding To Do list, planning the entertainment for your reception can feel like its own matrimonial entity altogether. With so many choices, where do you even begin? Before you get overwhelmed, pause and think about your wedding style. Is it casual? Formal? Are you including any cultural traditions? First know your preferences, then know what’s feasible for your venue.

We spoke with with Vrej Sarkissian, CEO of Anoush Catering and L.A. Banquets, who shared some advice on how to entertain your guests during the reception, and also some tips to keep in mind for your summer outdoor celebration.

DJ or Live Band

Music is a great way to rev everyone up and get them together on the dance floor. Whether you hire a DJ or a live band, make sure to meet with them beforehand and give them as many specifics as possible. What kind of music appeals to you? What’s the age range of your wedding guests? Any songs or music genres to avoid?

If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, think about logistics.  Consider the acoustics. What will you do if it rains or if it’s really windy? From amps to microphones to instruments and power sources, all your electricity and audio needs should be thought about beforehand.

Dancers

Dancers are a great way to captivate your guests and give them a taste of culture. Beautiful bright costumes, impressive dance moves and a great show - what’s not to love? Belly dancers, samba routines and traditional Armenian performances are colorful and engaging.

Video Booth or Photo Booth

Having your guests participate in a photo booth or video booth adds a fun and personal touch. Bonus points: create a custom backdrop that represents your personality. If you have guests at the reception who you don’t see very often, having these extra keepsakes from the big day will let you hang onto even more special memories.

On-Location Sketch or Silhouette Artist

Another fun option is to hire an on-location artist. Want some cute and whimsical sketches of your guests? Go with a caricature artist. How about a cool and dramatic portrait for your guests to take home? Check out silhouette artists!

Fire Performer

Talk about a show-stopper! The beauty of a fire performance is breathtaking. Of course you’ll need to make sure this is a feasible option with your venue, but if it’s possible, there are few things more visually stunning.

Don’t stress about planning your reception entertainment. If you need inspiration, think about what kind of interests you and your spouse share. And regardless of how you entertain your guests, remember that everyone is there to celebrate your union!
