How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

Written by . Posted in Articles & Guides

Your wedding photographer is one of the most important wedding vendors you choose. Some couples already know who they want to hire before there is even a ring involved! But others who are at the beginning stages of the planning process may not know how to assess one photographer’s services from another. While some couples use budget as their deciding factor, it is important to consider a photographer’s style and personality. Does their work speak to you? Are they someone you can get along with? Most couples may not realize that a photographer is like an extra member of their wedding party and will be with them all day. To navigate through this important and personal decision here are few questions to keep in mind.

What Do You Want To Remember From Your Wedding?

Before even beginning your search, think about the look and feel of your wedding. Is it a black tie affair or is it a big garden party? Once you have a better idea of what that will be, decide what is important for you to remember from that day. You might want to have an entire set of detail shots or you might prefer to just have fun candids of your family and friends throughout the night. When you know what you want captured during your wedding, think about what you’ll want to have as keepsakes afterward. Are albums really important to you? Would you rather have one large canvas print to hang on your wall? Or would you be happy with a few edited images you can easily upload on Facebook or Instagram?

What’s the Difference Between Photographer A and Photographer B?

It’s important to know not every photographer shoots the same way or offers the same products. They each have their strengths; some are better at creating stunning bridal portraits, while others might be great at capturing candid moments. While researching potential vendors, review their portfolios, websites and social media outlets and see if their work will match what you envision for your wedding. When you schedule an informational meeting, try to get a sense of their personality. See how you vibe with them. No two people are alike. Also, look through their albums and products and determine if it will suit your needs. Look for the quality and their creativity in what they have to offer.

What Will the Final Product Look Like?

A wedding photographer’s website or portfolio will only have 4 to 5 of their best images from each event. Asking to see an entire wedding that they have shot will give you a much better idea of what they are capable of and a better sense of what your album could look like. While you’re evaluating the photos, notice if they have more of the type of images you will want to have from your wedding.

What Package Is Right for You?

Every photographer charges differently and builds their packages accordingly. Some charge by the day while others by the hour. Sometimes it’s hard to make sense when you’re comparing photographers apple to apples. It’s more like apples to pears. When you know what you want and what you’re willing to spend, evaluate each of your potential wedding photographers as a whole: from their style, personality and the products they can deliver. Then ask yourself: are you comfortable with investing in this vendor with getting whatever they are promising to deliver? These questions will help you search and book the right photographer for your wedding.
